On 13 October, I had the pleasure of joining the Qorus Leadership Council in Dubai, exchanging perspectives with banking leaders from different markets on the evolution of SME banking. I left those conversations optimistic.
The transformation taking place in our industry gives us an opportunity to become much more valuable partners to the businesses we serve. Because the future of SME banking is about more than banking. It is about enabling businesses to move forward, grow and thrive.
Entrepreneurs do not experience their challenges through the lens of individual banking products. They are focused on running their businesses, creating opportunities, navigating change and pursuing their ambitions.
Our role must evolve accordingly. The banks that will remain most relevant will be those that understand the realities of their customers, anticipate their needs and make banking simpler, more connected and more relevant to where those businesses want to go.
AI and digital ecosystems will undoubtedly accelerate that evolution. They can help us become more insightful and responsive, while removing complexity from the customer experience.
But becoming more digital should never mean becoming more distant. Technology is most powerful when it strengthens the human relationship at the heart of banking.
The opportunity is not simply to digitise more interactions, but to make those interactions more valuable. To use technology to understand a need earlier. To remove friction. To create more space for meaningful conversations. And ultimately, to help businesses focus their energy on moving forward.
This thinking is very much aligned with our ambition at MCB Business Banking. As our customers evolve, we must evolve with them, continually asking how we can accompany their ambitions more effectively and create value beyond traditional banking.
There is good reason to be optimistic about what comes next. AI can strengthen insight. Digital ecosystems can strengthen connectivity. Simpler experiences can make banking more accessible and responsive. But technology alone will not define the future of SME banking. Our ability to combine these capabilities with understanding, trust and human connection will.
I left Dubai inspired by the quality and diversity of the perspectives shared, and convinced that we have an exciting opportunity ahead.
Our future will not simply be defined by how well we bank businesses, but by how well we help businesses move forward.
