The boys of St Joseph's College won Deba Klima Sezon 2. The competition, which ran on national TV channel, MBC since 18th May, came to a close on 6th July with the final. Deba Klima is an initiative of the MCB and the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, with the collaboration of Dr. François Gemenne, a specialist in environmental geopolitics and migration.
A memorable final
The final, an epic duel between St Joseph's College and Notre Dame College, kept all its promises. Both sets of students made their voices heard on the following theme: Bann zenn zenerasion pou plis kapav konbat sanzman klimatik ki bann senior. The girls of Notre Dame College intervened in favour, while their opponents of the SJC stood against. Both opponents showed bravery by having a combination of solid arguments, thorough research, and an evident passion for the environmental cause.
A mesmerized jury
Their remarkable flights, tinged with humor and beautiful local colors, seduced, conquered, and moved the jury, composed of Johanne Hague, lawyer; Kan Chan Kin, MSK, artist; Victoria Desvaux de Marigny, circular economy specialist; Stéphane Lebon, Sustainability Manager at MCB and Sookdeo Rungoo, Manager Education at RGSC. They were all unanimous; the finalists captured the attention with their respective arguments, supported by relevant data and examples.
Hard work pays
The long working hours and research in the fight against climate change paid off. Douglas Gerval, a St-Joseph's winning trio member, said he was "happy and proud to have won the final. Hard work paid off, and it was a pleasure."
A role to play
The Deba Klima has also raised awareness in the fight against climate change among students because "this fight is a race against time," highlights Loïc Edouard, another winning team member. "We all have a role to play. Both individually and collectively," he said.
Mastering the Creole language
Using the mother tongue in the debates has also marked the winners, like Matthew Laurette, who evokes an exceptional experience: "We learned fundamental things about the argumentation and right use of our mother tongue."
