The Beyond Graduate Programme was a launch pad for 25-year-old Nusrat Goolamun. She joined the 2024 MCB cohort after completing a degree in Finance with a minor in Law at the University of Mauritius.
“I discovered the programme through LinkedIn,” she recalls. “What stood out was the rotational structure, which promised exposure to different parts of the bank. That was perfect for someone like me who wanted to explore where I could bring in the most value.”
This mindset shaped how she approached every step of the programme and how she turned each rotation into a learning opportunity.
Making the most of the experience
Joining the programme was, for Nusrat, more than a traditional internship opportunity. It marked the beginning of a pathway designed to help graduates to succeed in banking.
“There’s structure, but there’s also room to explore and thrive,” she explains. “The rotations help you discover your strengths and build a solid internal network.” Her final rotation within the Financial Risk Department combined clear guidance with flexibility. “The learning happens both through tasks and how you engage with your environment.”
Gaining more confidence with each rotation, she noticed a significant transformation in her mindset.
“What stood out to me was the emphasis placed on learning and development. I used to be shy and reserved and would shrink from having to ask questions. But I have learned that curiosity and engagement are welcomed across the corporate environment. My colleagues and mentors were incredibly supportive.”
Reflecting on this experience, she shares that graduates are encouraged to discuss their insights among themselves and with seniors, which made her feel that her contributions were genuinely valued.
Managing the balance
Alongside her responsibilities as a trainee, Nusrat is pursuing further studies. Balancing the two can be challenging, but she has developed a routine.
“I manage my time by dedicating two hours a day to self-study and by focusing more deeply on weekends. When you have a goal to grow, it becomes easier to stay motivated.”
But she had to face one of her most defining moments during a technically complex rotation.
“At first, I was unfamiliar with many acronyms and the jargon, and it was very intimidating to say the least. Instead of shying away, I embraced the challenge face up. I started doing background research before meetings, asked a lot of questions, and constantly reminded myself of my motto: The steepest learning curve leads to the strongest growth. It proved true.”
Looking ahead
Aiming to grow further within MCB, Nusrat highlights how her development path has helped her identify where she can contribute most meaningfully.
“It enhanced my analytical and problem-solving skills, and most importantly, drove me to think more creatively. This journey has also shaped the way I analyse situations, approach challenges, and adapt to different contexts. Looking ahead, I aspire to take on greater responsibilities and step into a leadership position.”
Her advice to future graduates? Be proactive and open.
“Having a growth mindset is essential. The programme is designed to challenge you, but in the best possible way. Stay curious, open-minded and be willing to learn. If you bring those qualities, you will definitely make the most out of this experience.”
