The 20th edition of the National Spelling Bee Competition final took place this Tuesday, 11th June, in the auditorium of MCB St. Jean. This contest aims to reward students from Grade 7 to Grade 10 for their knowledge of English spelling. This competition is organised annually by the English Speaking Union with the support of the MCB Group.

The Spelling Bee Competition is a competition that brings together the best students of the island in English spelling. Through this activity, spellers experience the satisfaction of learning new words in English and their pronunciation and definition while improving their spelling and vocabulary. The Spelling Bee is one of the oldest and most iconic competitions in the United States. Twelve participants, ranging from grade 7 to 10, from different institutions across the country, for a total of 48 finalists, honoured the language of Shakespeare this year.
And the winners are:
Grade 7: Neil Nowjee, from Lycée Labourdonnais
Grade 8: Mohammad Sohail Saumtally, from Mahatma Gandhi Secondary School (Nouvelle-France)
Grade 9: Saquib Sayed Peerally, from St Joseph College
Grade 10: Kheshav Deepchand, from College du St Esprit
They won a cash prize of Rs 3000, Rs 4,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 respectively.
