The winners of Deba Klima Sezon 3 travelled to Rodrigues from August 24 to 28. Nygel Andon, Annehel Anna, and Adriano Bonnefemme from Collège de la Confiance, along with their teacher, had earned an eco-discovery trip as a reward for winning the competition, offered by the MCB Group. They stood out during the debates broadcast on MBC 1 and MBC Sat and won, after six weeks of intense competition, the final on the evening of Saturday, June 28, against Dr Maurice Curé State College. During their stay in Rodrigues, the winning team had the opportunity to explore its natural wonders, accompanied by representatives from MCB and the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre.
Awareness of Local Realities
The winners of Deba Klima sezon 3 were unanimously charmed by the simplicity of the inhabitants of Rodrigues. Nygel Andon is aware of the challenges faced by the inhabitants while being amazed by the population; “Both young and old take actions against climate change.” He also said he was “amazed by the lifestyle, simplicity, and self-sufficiency of the island’s inhabitants.” For Annehel Anna, another winner, “Life in Rodrigues is unique. The people, the culture, the vegetation, and the biodiversity showed me a different side of life that I didn’t know but experienced with admiration.”
Various Explorations
Discovering the giant tortoises at the François Leguat Reserve was one of the highlights of this eco-trip. The boys had the opportunity to observe hundreds of tortoises, tropical birds, and native trees up close. This visit also gave them the chance to explore the impressive Grande Caverne, revealing an ecosystem, both rich and unique, where fauna, flora, and Rodrigues’ geological heritage intersect. During their stay, the Deba Klima winners also met with divers and educators from the NGO Shoals Rodrigues, which has been advocating for the protection of marine biodiversity for several years. Through a guided tour in a glass-bottom boat, the teenagers discovered the aquarium and coral planting project at Rivière Banane.
